Some remarks on partitioned fluid-structure interaction algorithms
in hemodynamics
Abstract. In this talk, we focus on fluid-structure interaction
(FSI) problems
arising in the study of blood flow in large human arteries. In view
of
numerical simulations, we first review briefly some of the techniques
typically used, including the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE)
formulation to deal with moving domains and partitioned FSI algorithms
to solve separately the fluid and structure subproblems.
Under certain combinations of physical parameters, loosely coupled
FSI
time advancing schemes feature numerical instabilities. In the
case of
strongly coupled schemes, the same combinations of parameters lead,
in
general, to problems that demand a great computational effort,
requiring, for example, a large number of subiterations.
In this talk we provide a mathematical explanation for such
instabilities. We consider a simplified model representing the
interaction between a potential fluid and a linear elastic thin tube.
Despite its simplicity, this model reproduces propagation phenomena
and
takes into account the added-mass effect of the fluid on the structure,
which is known to be source of numerical difficulties. This allows
one
to draw conclusions that apply to the more realistic problem, as well.
The analysis applies to several FSI problems as well, in which
an
incompressible fluid interacts with a thin elastic structure.

Finite Element approximations for shells in cartesian coordinates
Abstract. We present a penalized shell model
with a little regularity midsurface, and finite
element approxiamtion thereof. Numerical tests are
given that validate and illustrate our appoach.

Simulation numérique d'un écoulement pulsatif dans
un tube flexible
Abstract : For stability reasons, the continuity of the stresses
at the fluid-structure interface
must hold at each time step.
In the following, this condition will be treated by the Least
Square Method and at each time step
we have to solve an optimization problem which is less sensitive to
the choice of the starting point.
This is the main advantage of this approach.
Another attractive point is that the fluid and structure meshes do
not necessarily match on the interface.
